Hi nice to meet you

From Protection to Strength

How to find fulfilment when life is complicated

What is ACT?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT, pronounced as in "ACTion") is a type of psychotherapy that helps you accept the difficulties that come with life and pursue your personal values. It is a ground-up therapy developed to target ways in which humans get stuck and to optimize mechanisms of change. While not the only way, it is a highly effective way to move forwards in our lives.

Essentially, ACT looks at your character traits and behaviors to assist you in reducing avoidant coping styles. ACT also addresses your commitment to making changes, and what to do about it when you can't stick to your goals or to your intentions.

By using different techniques, all designed to enhance our psychological flexibility, ACT enables you to get unstuck of past or future problems or worries and to get effective in reaching towards what really matters to you on a personal and unique level.

ACT focuses on 3 areas:

Accept your reactions and be present

Choose and connect with your values

Take effective action

  • Group Therapy

The goal of Group Therapy is to help you get unstuck and moving in your life, meaning living in a way that is vital and meaningful according to each group member. This will require identifying and clarifying personal values and learning to make choices in accordance with those values, thus moving from unworkable behaviours to those that further who you want to be and how you want to be living.

Members will experience that, eventhough they might live different lives, they also have things in common. Fostering core abilities together will enable you to make value-driven choices and to get going in your life now

  • Individual Psychotherapy

Normally the goal of Individual Psychotherapy is to help you find the root causes of distressing emotional and behavioral patterns so that you can experience emotional growth in order to transcend the limitations of painful experiences. It is the process of learning about yourself in order to make changes in how you experience your life and interact with the world.

However, sometimes lives have been so complicated that we'll never know for sure exactly why things are like they are. And for those who get stuck in asking why and do not get to the So what now, ACT can be a brilliant way to leave the why's behind and go forward.

  • Individual Counseling

The goal of Individual Counseling is to help you in a shorter-term, solution-focused treatment of a specific problem, such as improving communication in relationships, stress related issues, or lifestyle changes.

This might be done in a context where a deadline is looming, or where a very specific topic is chosen. For some people, counseling can be sufficient for the time being.

Other topics might emerge during the counseling. However, if that is the case, the client and therapist both assess whether these topics should be addressed or not at that time and place.

  • Couples Therapy

Over time, I have realised that I often particularly enjoy working with ACT and couples. It truly is a team work and although we do not meet every week, it is so inspiring to be able to see the progress couples can experience when they have had the courage to begin working together.

The goal is to reduce tension and stress and to increase caring and compassion for each other. We do this by enhancing communication, shared values and psychological flexibility while also disentangling the couple of past or present hurt, judgements, and unhelpful thoughts.

In the end, hopefully, you experience a  richer, realistic, authentic and loving long-term relationship.

About me

Hi, my name is Mirjam de Vries and I am a licensed and passionate Psychotherapist in the Vaud area of Switserland.

My main workbase lies in Morges, where I work in my private practice and receive my individual clients and couples. In addition to being in private practice I have long worked in the academic world of scientific research, indulging in the exhilarating combination of the psychological perspectif (emotions, defenses), the medical perspectif (needs of cancer patients and their doctors, within realistic boundaries) and a touch of philosophy about it all.

While I have spent most of my career in academia and in a multitude of professional environments within the field of clinical psychology, I attempt to utilize my skills in various professional and creative settings.

Originally from the Netherlands, I have lived and worked in Switzerland for over 10 years. I am a member of several professional associations, such as the Swiss Federation of Psychologists (the FSP).

My professional background is in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, a widely used and scientifically recognized form of therapy, although my interests have led me to encounter various other forms of therapy, all part of clinical psychology.

I receive adults for individual, couple or group sessions.

My tasks are to listen - actively and without judgement - and to share my clinical experience and theoretical knowledge with the goal of helping you reaching towards what really matters to you on a personal and unique level.

I believe in providing each of my clients with a customized approach to maximize the value from each therapeutic session.

If any of the above services are of interest or resonate with you, I invite you to reach out to me to discuss what you think would be most helpful.
